Approaches to Curriculum Planning

Curriculum Planning is an essential aspect of effective teaching that establishes the groundwork of students’ academic success. Teachers use the YCYW Curriculum Guides and the YCYW Overarching Curriculum Concepts to plan out where students need to go and how to get there. Curriculum Planning involves teachers collaboratively designing, developing and implementing programs that include learning objectives, standards, assessments, and our approaches to learning and teaching. Curriculum planning ensures all learners and needs are catered for and documented. The school has a whole school approach to curriculum planning as well as how yearly subject plans, unit plans and lesson plans are documented on Managebac.

  • Teachers reference whole school curriculum maps and Managebac unit plans.

  • Teachers know how each lesson(s) fits within a unit and the bigger picture of the YCYW curriculum guides

  • Teachers plan using Backwards by Design; that is assessment is planned first and then activities.

  • Teachers pre-assess students to find out what they already know from the previous year as well as existing knowledge. Teachers use this question when planning, “What will students learn that they didn’t know before in this unit?”

  • Teachers plan for every learner to be challenged, engaged and motivated.

  • Curriculum Planning is reflective, therefore teachers adjust plans in line with student needs whether it is during a lesson, unit, or even the year-long course.
